Abstract
The article considers the politics of human enhancement through Michel Foucault’s thought. It examines how sovereign, disciplinary and biopolitical economies of power construct the relationship between individuals, the state and law, and interprets contemporary human-enhancement policies as a possible consequence of the development of pastoral forms of power and care.
Author's summary
I use the problem of human enhancement as a test case for Foucault’s account of modern power. The article asks what happens when political authority increasingly justifies intervention through care for life, health and human capacities. This perspective allows enhancement policies to be analysed not only as technological or bioethical issues, but also as a problem of political power.
