Abstract
The monograph analyses the relationship between power and the subject through a comparative study of selected theories of social power, with particular emphasis on Michel Foucault and Steven Lukes. It examines how assumptions about subjectivity, interests, preferences, autonomy and agency influence the explanation of power relations and the conditions under which power becomes effective.
Author's summary
The book is the central theoretical statement of my research on the subjective conditions of power. Its main argument is that a theory of power cannot be separated from its model of the human subject: assumptions about agency, interests, preferences and the formation of subjectivity determine what can count as power and how its effectiveness can be explained.
Keywords
