Abstract

The essay revisits István Bibó’s diagnosis of Central and East-Central Europe as a region shaped by political insecurity, weak state traditions, nationalism and fear. It asks whether Bibó’s post-war interpretation remains useful after the collapse of the communist bloc and European integration, and considers which elements of the historical diagnosis still illuminate contemporary Central European political identity.

Author's summary

The text is an early attempt to connect political thought with the contemporary self-understanding of Central Europe. I use Bibó not simply as a historical author, but as a diagnostic framework for asking which features once treated as signs of regional weakness—conflict, national attachment or political nonconformity—persist and how their meaning has changed.
