Abstract

The chapter examines the social and political conditions that enabled Archbishop Makarios III to become president of Cyprus. It relates this outcome to two factors: the continuing Orthodox tradition of close relations between religious and political authority and the island’s distinctive historical experience as a borderland in which the Orthodox Church long served as a substitute for national statehood among Greek Cypriots.

Author's summary

This paper uses Cyprus to analyse the political consequences of historically embedded religious authority. The case of Makarios III shows how leadership cannot be explained solely through constitutional institutions: long-term cultural memory, borderland experience and the church’s role as a substitute for statehood can generate exceptional political legitimacy.
