Abstract

The article presents the processual theory of power in relation to dictate, power and the state. It discusses three model forms of dictate—the dictate of power, idea and form—as mechanisms intended to explain major political transformations, and analyses the state as a subject capable of establishing a dictate because of its political character and its capacity to aggregate resources.

Author's summary

The article develops one element of my reconstruction of Jadwiga Staniszkis’s theory of power: the relation between large-scale political change and the state. It shows that the concept of dictate is not merely a description of domination, but a mechanism linking specific configurations of power with transformative political agency.
