Abstract

The chapter examines whether Steven Lukes’s three-dimensional theory of power can be incorporated into a neoclassical realist research programme. It compares central concepts in both approaches, including the international system and situation of action, the state and the subject of power, national and real interests, foreign-policy preferences and individual preferences, and state capabilities and power.

Author's summary

This paper explores a bridge between general power theory and international-relations theory. Its main conclusion is that most central categories of Lukes’s framework can be mapped onto neoclassical realism without conceptual contradiction, while state capability and relational power should remain analytically distinct.
